This car parked in front of an apartment complex caught my attention on a recent morning walk. Why shouldn’t I be serious, I thought as I took a detour to get a closer look. I watch and read the news: fires, floods, disasters, doom, gloom, political upheavals, protests, attacks. violence, financial uncertainty, deaths and terrorist threats.
There was an image of The Joker on the back window and one on the left side you that can barely make out in the photo. It was a sporty looking little muscle car with fancy wheel covers; I speculated about the owner. Perhaps an aspiring comedian? Or some old guy who was tired of being serious? Was the color a nod to Mardi Gras?
The sun felt warm on my face after the darker days of January; I was safe for the moment and had much to be thankful for. I smiled and continued on my walk.
UPDATE: Marie Zhuikov shared in a comment today that “Why so serious?” is The Jokers’ catchphrase in the movie “The Dark Knight.” Thanks, Marie! You can visit her blog here.
The is much to be serious about but the car does make a point. In the end does being serious help? Fun post, Jo.

Thanks, John. I don’t think being too serious or worrying all the time helps. Guess I am guilty of both some days. I have been enjoying your book tour.

I think we all worry too much about thanks Jo.

Well, that was interesting! Purple and green–good guess on Mardi Gras. But the Joker sounds like an ominous clue also. That doesn’t look like very serious writing either, so maybe it was just meant to be fun and cool?

You are right. There was always that element of evil lurking behind The Joker’s smile. And the writing was playful. I thought it was fun and cool to see.

It was creative if not subtle. I haven’t seen the car since. Thanks for stopping by.

Food for thought … but I wouldn’t do that to a car

No, it is not subtle and could be easily identified. I tend to prefer a simple black.

A few weeks ago, a similar car was parked outside my apartment complex. But it was a black car with the face of the Joker himself. That definitely caught my attention. Maybe we should embody some of the characteristics of the Joker and not be so serious all the time. It can be hard, but we need a little humor.

We all seem to love The Joker even when he is bad. Yes, I agree we need a little humor these days. Thanks for sharing! I have not seen the car again even though I still pass that apartment when when driving.

I still remember the day I saw a purple Mercedes in the Texas Medical Center with a license plate that spelled out “Gauche.” I laughed then and I’m laughing again. I think the Mercedes owner and your purple car person have a little something in common — I love it!

Now that was a classy statement for the car. I enjoy car watching. I am sure there was a story behind that purple Mercedes in Houston no less.

There is much to be serious about… and a lot of reasons to have fun. That car would have made me smile too. 🙂

Yes, sometimes we just have to smile or even laugh. We can’t solve all the world problems. Thanks for the visit.

The phrase on the car is the Joker’s catchphrase in “The Dark Knight” movie. The car owner must be a fan.

Thank you, Marie, that makes sense! No one else picked up on that. Now I know something about the owner. I don’t keep up with those movies and haven’t seen one in years.

Should you be inclined, you can buy a ‘Why So Serious’ decal online!

Lots to be serious about. However, I shut down my electronic toys every night, and draw and sew… go back to a creative escape, and recharge.
Funny thing about The Joker, he’s not funny, (well he is if one is demented in the Joker way). He’s serious as all get out about his mischief.
Thanks Jo! A fun post.

There are far too many serious matters in our world, I agree Jo,..
But I am glad you were able to feel the sun’s- LIGHT on your face…
As we shine more Light into our world, the Sun, always brings about those deeper shadows…
As more of us shine our lights, We will begin to illuminate those darker shadows, which we couldn’t see before.
Much love to you Jo.. Have a lovely weekend ❤

That’s very funny. I would be the last person to own a purple car, plus a purple car with that message, but as an observer, I appreciate the sentiment. 🙂 xo

I enjoyed this post because I almost felt like I was on the walk with you – or I could relate to being on a walk and seeing something like this and having it take you on a thought journey. And hearing that it is a Drak Knight quote changes the context for me – I refuse to watch he movie because it just seems too dark for me. However, before I read that it was related to the movie, the simple question “why so serious?” it reminded me of a shirt I used to wear around Christmas. It said “Lighten Up” and had christmas lights. I loved it because in addition to liking holiday lights – the literal meaning is what I was going for – some people need to lighten up – and I just ran into some folks I had not seen for a long time – and they are big cranks. It can be really good for our health to “lighten up” a bit. and we can still be highly conscientious and take care of matters effectively – without being overly serious or a big heavy crank!
