SIGNS THAT FALL IS COMING TO THE COAST

1)  The whooping cranes have left Canada and are heading for Texas.

2)  Hummingbirds are swarming my feeders and it is time for the Rockport Hummingbird Celebration.  One year a woodpecker helped itself to the feeders.  I have not seen it this year.

3)  I will be looking for white pelicans to arrive before long.  They arrive in the fall and leave when it gets warm in the spring.

 4)  The stores start to fill with faux leaves, pumpkins, wreaths, cinnamon scented candles, bibelots and everything we need to decorate our homes and pretend that we have a real fall season where the leaves turn a golden hue, and drop poetically to the earth.

5)  I pick a Syrah from Texas Hills Vineyards to celebrate the autumnal equinox.  Texas Hills Vineyard is a small but elegant winery just outside of Johnson City.  We picked up this bottle there last year.

    • Yes, it is a lovely time. Our falls are quite mild and usually we don’t see cold weather until December or January and even then it is mild. Last year we barely had a little light frost only once or twice. Enjoy your cool fall! Thanks for the comment!

  1. It is the time of the autumn equinox, and the harvest is winding down. The fields are nearly empty, because the crops have been plucked and stored for the coming winter. We, the pagans, begin our celebration with wines from the Texas Hill Country………you have begun the tradition so well! By the way, the husband takes great photos. It is so lovely to not be living in an oven and as you say, pretend that we have an autumn. I shall throw about all the faux leaves and plug in the Fall scented air fresheners………yes, we shall enjoy the equinox, pour some more wine!

    • We shall toast to you and yours, Tin Man, and be thankful in the pagan tradition for the season of harvest and for friends like you. The cotton and grain crops are all in and the fields will lie fallow. Cheers to life!

  2. I was reading a book at bedtime last night that mentioned the Autumnal Equinox, and the author marks new segment with the date and when I realized what day it was, I was like “It’s tomorrow!” Yay Fall! 🙂

  3. Last night I was with you in mind. Lar and I had our quiet celebration of the Autumnal Equinox. Officially 7:29 p.m. We lit a fire in the chimera and simply enjoyed the evening. As dusk slipped in a large flock of Canadian geese flew over – almost touch our rooftop. The whamp whamp whamp flap of their wings. Their heartbreaking honking as they disappeared over the horizon. They were heralding in the autumn days.

    • We almost celebrated last night also. Isn’t it wonderful to be in tune with the flow of nature’s time? How nice to sit with one you love and simply enjoy the moment as you did! Soon it will be cool enough here to enjoy an outdoor fire and perhaps a harvest moon. I am thank for another season.and a friend like you. Cheers!

  4. I was going to say that I was surprised that the birds have more sense than people and head to the warmer climes for the oncoming winter, but you know I’m not really 🙂

  6. Husband is quite the photographer! I love the hummer feeding. The wine and cheese board look like a glossy magazine photo! I never liked fall until we moved here. I think I am so grateful for the cooler nights and mornings. Creative post, Jo Nell. I enjoyed it!
